Create yourself!

Hello High Heelers

Oh my gosh! I did it. I cut my hair. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for years, but just didn’t have the courage. Ok, so before you think I’m completely bald, let me be more specific and explain that I cut my fringe (i.e. I got ‘bangs’ – for our American High Heelers).

I thought my boyfriend was going to give me the ‘shifty-eyed’ “it looks ok” with that little squeak he gets in his inflection when he’s hiding the truth in an effort to, um, survive. But he didn’t. The Squidge-master took one look and told me that I’ve gone up half a point on the hotness scale. I’m now a 10.5 (which he also managed to get out without the squeak – well done, I’d say!) It feels a little different. But it feels like me. And I think it will make me stand out a little more, in a good kind of way.

You know, I was going through interview questions with Natalie a few weeks ago, as our PR Agency feel she’d add a lot to a great inspirational women’s piece. I tend to agree . And one of the things she said, that really stuck with me, is that you need to choose who you are and be that thing with everything you are. Natalie really lives by that and it works for her. If you’re a sexy woman in a men’s world, why tone yourself down to fit in? (or fade out of the spotlight). If you pick who you are and stay true to yourself, you create your own rule book and your own destiny – you can only succeed.

On an aesthetic level, create your own style and allow yourself to be known for that. Be the woman in the office who wears the most stunning heels (like Natalie). Be the guy with the funkiest set of briefcases (see how I’m attending to men’s needs too?) Be the snappy dresser, the Friday music man, the hot red-lipstick chick, the fun belt girl, the cute glasses-wearer, the forties-inspired-dresses lady, the hat guy or the hairstyle queen. Find your unique visual self, highlight it and allow it to make you memorable.

On a work level, be known for your influence in the office. Be the guy who sends out inspirational quotes when the company is having a hard time. Be the knowledgeable and helpful girl anyone can go to when they need to know something. Be the reliable one who can be approached during a crisis and holds the team together. Know your strengths and allow yourself to be unforgettable due to the value you add.

Natalie is someone who’s really figured this out. Aesthetically, you cannot forget her. She dresses to be remembered. On the work side, if you’re angry with a colleague and need to vent – you don’t go to Nats. That’s not her thing. She’s not going to give you a tissue and a cookie and tell you it’s all going to be ok. She’s more likely to unleash some WHOOP ASS! But if you need to learn something about business and you approach her for help. You know she’ll find the time to carefully go through all your questions with patience and incredible detail. She’s a businesswoman. That’s her thing and that’s what she’s known for and she stays relevant by sharing her mind with anyone who’s genuinely keen to learn more.

May I encourage you to all look at who you are and what you want to be known for this week? Don’t allow it to be incidental. Create your memorability. Make yourself unforgettable by highlighting your talent and your strengths. Be the master of your image and control people’s perceptions of you. But whatever you do, make sure you’re true to yourself.

Have fun exploring your inner and outer self this week and let’s see an explosion of our essences. Till next time... walk tall and remember if you’re going to be anything, make sure it’s memorable.

Cheers,
Jo
