The Devil Wears Prada

Hello High Heelers

I have been eating salad every day for 2 weeks (how good am I?) and my clothes are still as tight. How is that fair? Two weeks of salad eating should result in a loss of at least 2 dress sizes. That’s my opinion – and it counts. Argh! To be fair, people have told me that my skin looks great – so all the fresh fruit, veggies and water have paid off in my complexion, but not in the fitting in (to the ‘thin pants’ that is!)

They say that patience is a virtue, but I’m afraid, I’m not a very virtuous woman in this area. And neither is Natalie Maroun. This week Natalie was unleashing some WHOOP ASS in her office. Her voice could be heard (though the words were unclear) as far as reception, as the glass walls vibrated to the tone of sheer angriness and disappointment. I didn’t know who was getting it, and was actually quite relieved. Because if you’re getting WHOOP ASS like that, you have certainly done something wrong – something very wrong!

So for the rest of the week I’ve been keeping my salad-eating, chocolate-craving self away from my boss. When Natalie turns up the heat – she turns it right up! (that goes for everything from partying, to succeeding, to losing her temper!) So it’s been safer to just stay away in case I’ve done something stupid, wrong, idiotic, or just plain dumb.

The WHOOP ASS commotion makes me think about The Devil Wears Prada. A lot of you High Heelers have asked me if Natalie is like Miranda Priestly in this film – the character played by Meryl Streep who is the Editor of Runway Magazine, a highly ruthless and impatient woman with power. And I guess in some ways she is. Natalie sets an example that has influenced my dress sense (my boyfriend thinks I look hotter since working with her – not to mention the neater nails!) And yes, I’ve become pushier, have a greater sense of urgency and expect more from myself and others.

But unlike Andrea Sachs (played by Anne Hathaway) in the movie, I am better for working with the tough woman boss I have. I’ve learned so much. I’ve realised that my capabilities are as great as I believe they are, and that I can do anything I want to, as long as the intention is right. I’ve realised that Natalie is not actually like Miranda at all. Because in the end, Miranda follows her own interests first. For those of you who’ve seen the film, you’ll recall that she makes a decision that is best for her rather than for a staff member who has worked so hard to reach greater career heights.

Natalie puts her people first. She pushes us to be our best. When I criticise myself (us girls can be so bad as that – sigh!) she stands up for me and she encourages me to reach higher. Having a great mentor in the office is a blessing. But may I remind you that a mentor is not someone who’ll agree with your every thought, feed you candy floss and sing warm fuzzy songs with you. A great mentor is someone who leads by example, pushes you when necessary and sometimes scares the hell out of you with their belief in your potential.

This week look around you and see if there is a great High Heeler in your midst who can be this mentor in your life. Align yourself with them and allow yourself to release some WHOOP ASS onto your own life.

Walk tall and tough this week High Heelers.

Cheers,
Jo
