Planning for the best

Hello High Heelers

I’m starting to feel that weird creepy feeling. Like all the wheels are falling off – quite literally! Remember last week I told you that my tire popped? This weekend my man’s tire also popped. Then his father had a car incident, followed by his cousin, and yesterday a taxi collided with a bakkie in front of me in traffic and their tires became entwined. See? (cue the eerie music) The wheels are falling off!

The New Year always begins with a bang and before you know it, it vanishes and you often don’t achieve all the things you wanted to do. I’m trying so hard to take control of my year, this year. As I sit tapping away at my Business Plan for 2011/2012, I think that I need to also draw up a personal life plan. I know it sounds a little ‘self-help-ish’ (yes, yes, I think I may be going Oprah on you all) but it will add value to our lives. If we can spend so much time planning work, why not do it in our home lives?

I met with Natalie last week and she guided me with structure and budgeting, since I was very much all over the place with my planning. It’s quite simple – put all the details of what you want to do down, and then draw out the important things, put deadlines to them and then cost them out with a budget. Then take out what you can’t afford and prioritise the vital things. And there you go – ta dah!

May I suggest that budgeting on the home-front may not represent actual finances, it is often a representation of time (since time = money!) So list the people you need to connect with personally this year, decide what dates you’ll be seeing them and work out the time you have available. I’m also going to go out on a limb here (there’s a hot heel at the end of the limb – I promise!) and suggest that some people just won’t fit into your budget this year because they’re too expensive. Remember, people who take all of your time and energy are depleting what you have. So be sure to fill your life plan with valuable people in 2011.

Though there is also depletion in time that is a great investment. For instance, I have recently acquired a fabulous new addition to my team, in the form of my ‘fresh out of varsity’ marketing intern. I check my ‘personal time plan’ and look at how expensive he is – wow – the guy costs a fortune! Is it worth it? Yes. Is he a priority? Yes. We should always make time to share knowledge and experience with others. Not only will he impact my future as he adds value to what I do, but he will also add value to the future of my country when he impacts our economy positively and gives back.

Natalie has spent much time investing in my knowledge. Someone in your world is doing the same for you. So make sure to put together your personal plan, with a little space for giving back.

Have a wonderful week High Heelers and get the wheel turning faster by pushing your heels down on the accelerator to a wonderful 2011.

Cheers,
Jo
