Hello High Heelers
As I write this post, I am quivering at the reaction of my boss, Natalie Maroun. She can be very very very (I’d add another 20 VERYs in – however, I think you get the point) scary when she’s mad. I haven’t seen it, I’ve only heard the rumours. But you only live once, so here goes... Natalie has horns. She really does. Real, proper, actual horns. I am not kidding. And before you think I’ve been stalking her from behind and ruffling through her hair, like a crazy person – let me explain.
Natalie whisked her fabulous man away for his birthday to some beautiful lodge a few months ago. And while there she went shopping (like any High Heeler would do) and probably bought all sorts of lovely things from the lodge shop. One of the items she really liked in the store, just happened to be an elegant mounted horn. So she did what any office-loving lady would do – she ordered 10 for the office. Then she waited 3 months for them to be delivered. Sigh!
Finally Natalie’s horns arrived. All 10 of them. I took one look at the lot and almost fainted. As a tree-hugging, ‘fish are friends not food’, vegetarian-type person, I went into shock mode. I was close to putting together ‘horns have feelings too’ banners and striking in the reception area (I have the tendency to go a touch overboard sometimes and I even managed to rally up some supporters). The negotiation had to be had. The referendum was held. And I lost (Argh – I HATE losing). All 10 horns were to stay and I was to get on with life.
Then I began to think about it. Hmmm. I mean really deeply think about it. Manolos, Louboutins, Pradas, Louis Vuitton – all these beautiful things come from the same place that horns come from – and I will not mention the name or think about it further! And beyond the argument I asked myself a very important question – ‘Does it matter?’ Then I asked myself an even more important question ‘Does it really matter in the greater scheme of things?’ And the answer to these questions is ‘No’.
High Heelers, the wicked truth is that sometimes you just need to accept things and move on. There are battles worth fighting – abuse at work, sexism, anti-heel policies, etc. And then there are battles that simmer and fizzle out because they don’t infringe on anything real. You need to step out of the situation when you’re feeling challenged and ask yourself whether it’s a fight worth winning. Sometimes in winning you actually lose and sometimes when you lose you actually win. I think I actually won through this loss – phew!
Let me encourage you to shake out your belief system this week and make decisions based on what matters in the bigger picture and what doesn’t. Is the issue a little horn in your side, or is it a deep unacceptable infringement on your basic human rights. Get off your soap box, put on your big-girl heels and walk tall.
When your values are shattered give it horns and dig your heels in. But when it doesn’t change your life and really doesn’t matter in the greater scheme of things, then heel and toe away and stride on up to bigger things.
Have a great week High Heelers and keeping looking up!
Cheers,
Jo

Hi Jo
Interesting topic this week! I am not a vegetarian and hate the idea of animals being used for human consumption and decoration (so I guess I am already a hypocrite - haha )
It is interesting what your saying - about choosing your battles. I think that if something goes against your morals you have to make a stand. You don't necesarily have to start a picket line but even a small stand is all that is required some times, it depends how important it is to you. The very fact that you made your feelings known speaks volumes of your bravery. Unfortunately what the boss says, goes. On her karma for buying them in the first place and supporting that trade!
