Hello High Heelers
I woke up this morning and squeezed myself into my black pencil skirt, realising that once again, I have gained weight. Argh! I have lumps and bumps in new places and I just don’t know where they came from – they can’t possibly be from the all chocolate eating! Today, I decide not to beat myself up about it though – what for? Today I decide to embrace my curves and appreciate my womanly self. Ok, who am I kidding? I need to cut the chocolate and hit the gym.
On the topic of looking good, on Wednesday this week Natalie swayed into the office (I’ve decided that she ‘sways’. She has this purposeful elegant walk that isn’t quite a march but isn’t simply a walk) looking stunning in her fifties inspired outfit and the cutest black and white heels. She was carrying the most beautiful gift bag ever seen in human history (only slight exaggeration here). It included a pretty black and cerise pink patterned glossy gift bag with deep pink roses, ribbons, lace, tissue paper and all the bells and whistles. Now that’s how you wrap a gift! (And she wrapped it herself).
I couldn’t help but think – wow! And as nosy as I am, I didn’t really wonder what was in the bag (usually I’d have followed the delivery and then insisted that the receiver show me all the contents). I just wished that it was for me, because you could tell from the wrapping that the gift was put together with thought, passion and care. The wrapping was symbolic of the emotion, time and efforts that came from a deeply personal place (the effort in it seemed greater than what could ever possibly be inside – even if it was packed with a pair of Louboutins). Looking at the gift made me realise that the exterior is as important as the interior. The exterior is a reflection of what’s inside and it gives away the soul of the person who puts it together.
I sometimes get criticism for loving shoes, nails and pretty things and I can absolutely defend myself – I am not superficial (ok – only a little bit and only sometimes!) The phrase ‘you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover’ does not stand in today’s world – sure I’ve often found a gem between average covers. But in this day and age it’s about the whole package. That’s why Penguin and McMillan pay for excellent photography and classy design – because the cover is as important as the words inside. When you’re walking through a bookstore do you really pick up the novels that look average? Sure – if you’ve heard about the book, you might. However, the reality is that the interesting design catches your eye first, then you read the back blurb and then you make a decision on whether or not to buy it.
I always try to bring my quirkiness through what I wear – fun earrings, colourful shoes, or simply something pretty in my hair. It makes me feel like I’m showing the world who I am – and I hope that they see that. We reflect our soul through our choice in clothing and in the way we present ourselves to the world.
This week High Heelers, remember that you are a gift and that your inner gifts are unique. Wrap yourself with care as you show the world that what’s inside is precious and valuable. Natalie’s wardrobe always reflects her unique flair, classic style, creativity and self-worth. Standing next to her in my career makes me proud as her outer and inner image reflect onto me.
“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life’s about creating yourself.”
- George Bernard Shaw
Be confident and adorn yourself with value as you put your best heel forward. Have a great week High Heelers!
Cheers,
Jo
